Instagram Live Producer enables professional streams

Thanks to a new feature, Instagram users will soon finally be able to start live streams via desktop. By using streaming software, the live videos get a more professional look.

The Instagram Live feature is a popular and widely used way for creators and users to connect directly with their followers. It is all the more astonishing that Instagram has not yet enabled live streaming via desktop – until now: the platform is currently testing the option of using streaming software (e.g. OBS, Streamyard or Streamlabs) to go live via desktop.

Instagram provides more information regarding the new feature here ready. However, at the current time (as of July 12, 2022) the page is not available. At the moment, the feature is still in the testing phase with a small group of people, as a meta spokesperson explained to TechCrunch:

We are always working on ways to make Instagram Live a meaningful place for shared experiences. We’re now testing a way to allow broadcasters to go Live using streaming software with a small group of partners.

More professional streams thanks to external video equipment

By linking to a streaming software of their choice, users can now also use external cameras and microphones for live streams instead of those of their smartphones. After the Live Producer Tool has been opened, entering the Stream URL and Stream Key allows broadcasting directly to Instagram Live. To start the stream, Instagram must then be opened on the desktop and the live function must be selected using the plus at the top of the screen. Now users can name the live stream, set the broadcast to “public” and preview the stream. This should look identical on Instagram and in the streaming software.

These features are not (yet) available with Live Producer

Instagram points out that users should first end the stream in Live Producer and then in the streaming software. Otherwise, the stream continues on Instagram for the time being and only shows the last frame before the streaming software ended. In addition, the platform explains that comments can only be viewed and answered via the Live Producer.

At the current time, some well-known live features are not yet available for the Live Producer. This includes the Live Rooms, shopping and the fundraiser option. The Q&A function and the option to pin comments are also currently not available – just like that recently launched moderation function.
