One person was killed and five were injured outside a Kansas City bar where off-duty workers were working as security guards, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 11:00 p.m. Sunday following an altercation inside the Westport Ale House, KCTV and KMBC television reported from the scene, citing the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Three off-duty Kansas City officers were working security for the premises, according to the patrol, and returned fire during the shooting. There were no reports of officers injured during the shooting.
“In a situation like this, you can’t really predict what’s going to happen, but the Ale House took precautions,” Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.
The Associated Press left a message asking for more information from Lowe and the highway patrol.
An email requesting information was also sent to a Kansas City police spokeswoman.
At first it was unclear if the officers’ shots had hit anyone, according to the patrol. The shooting was under investigation.
