The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs announced, on Monday, that the world population is supposed to reach eight billion people on November 15, and it is also expected that India will replace China and become the most populous country in 2023.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement that while the world’s population is expected to reach eight billion, it is “a reminder of our shared responsibility to look following our planet and a moment to reflect on our commitments to one another that we still do not honor.”
It is also an occasion to celebrate our diversity, to recognize our common humanity, and to express our admiration for progress in health that has extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality,” Guterres said.
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the world’s population is currently growing at its slowest pace since 1950.
It may reach regarding 8.5 billion people in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050, with it expected to reach a peak with regarding 10.4 billion people in the years 2080 and to remain at this level until the year 2100.
While a clear decline in the fertility rate has been observed in several countries considered developed, the expected increase in the population of the Earth in the coming decades will be concentrated in more than half of it in eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania, according to the United Nations.
