A 16-year-old teenager was arrested following ramming the truck he was driving into the headquarters of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, on the central west coast of Florida (USA), authorities reported.
The young man, who is in custody, rammed his vehicle into the side of the police station on Friday night and then told the officers who arrested him that his intention was “to hurt himself,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The event occurred an hour following the teenager fled from a police patrol, which ordered him to stop following noticing that the vehicle did not have its lights on.
During the chase that ensued, the young man ran a red light, according to police.
Shortly following, the driver rammed the truck into the sheriff’s office headquarters and pushed the deputy who tried to pull him out of the car. According to the agency, the damage to the structure as a result of the accident amounts to 16,000 dollars.
The young man’s father later pointed out that both were in a shelter and center for minors, when suddenly the minor left the site aboard the van in which they had arrived.
According to local News Channel 8, the father told officers that he did not call authorities because he thought his son would drive back home.
The minor is in police custody under a Florida law (Baker Act) that allows people with mental health problems to be detained.
