Putin expressed his condolences to the current President of Angola, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, over the death of his predecessor, Jose Eduardo dos Santos. The telegram was published on the Kremlin website.

“Dear Mr. Lourenço, please accept our deepest condolences on the death of the former President of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos. The history of Angolan statehood is inextricably linked with the name of dos Santos. I ask you to convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as to the entire people of Angola, ”Putin said in a telegram published on the Kremlin website.

The President noted that dos Santos made a significant contribution to the development of friendly Russian-Angolan relations. Vladimir Putin also added that dos Santos enjoyed deep respect from his fellow citizens and significant international prestige.

José Eduardo dos Santos was the second President of Angola. He held the post for 38 years – from 1979 to 2017. The ex-head of Angola died on July 8 at the age of 79 in Spain following a long illness, reports channel 360. Before his death, he was in the hospital in the intensive care unit. The current president declared five days of mourning in the country in connection with the death of his predecessor.
