The value of the weapons promised or delivered by the United States for Ukraine totals 7.3 billion US dollars. Among them are another four HIMARS multiple rocket launchers. According to the Pentagon, these “interfere with the Russians’ ability to invade further.”
The US wants to supply Ukraine with additional HIMARS multiple rocket launchers. The new armaments package with a total value of 400 million dollars (393 million euros) includes four HIMARS rocket launchers with ammunition as well as new precision artillery shells, as a high-ranking representative of the US Department of Defense announced. Radar equipment for artillery reconnaissance and spare parts are also part of the delivery.
HIMARS missile launchers can launch multiple precision-guided missiles simultaneously at targets up to 80 kilometers away. They allow the Ukrainian army to attack the Russian army from a greater distance, without being within range of the Russian artillery itself. With the delivery that has now been promised, the Ukrainian army would have twelve HIMARS systems.
Ukraine received the first HIMARS rocket launchers last month. Experts suggest that since then the Ukrainian army has destroyed regarding a dozen Russian ammunition dumps or more far behind the front lines. The Pentagon representative rejected statements by the Russian military that two copies had been destroyed. All HIMARS delivered to Ukraine are still in use.
Pentagon: Russians ‘way behind schedule’
Referring to the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine, the Pentagon official assured that the HIMARS missile launchers allowed Ukraine to “significantly disrupt the Russians’ ability to invade further.” The Russian army is making only “limited” and “very expensive” progress in its campaign of conquest in the Donbass. “They are way behind schedule,” it said.
The promised new precision artillery shells are said to have a caliber of 155 millimeters. They would have a longer range and higher accuracy than previous US-supplied missiles, the Pentagon official said. “This will save ammunition: it will be more effective.”
The Pentagon representative did not want to say whether these projectiles were of the Excalibur type. These projectiles have a range of more than 40 kilometers and can release the ammunition with pinpoint accuracy. Canada has already shipped some of these very expensive US-made bullets to Ukraine. So far, the United States has said it has pledged or already delivered arms and equipment worth $7.3 billion to Ukraine since the war began at the end of February.
