Major outage at Rogers: “not a cyberattack”, says an expert

Cybersecurity expert Jacques Sauvé does not believe that a cyberattack is the cause of the major outage affecting Rogers’ cellular and Internet network.

“I think it’s either equipment failure, misconfiguration or human error,” he says.

However, he deplores the silence of the telecommunications giant in the file. The expert believes that the company, but also the government, will have a post mortem to do.

“…At the federal government level, the CRTC say, are we perhaps too dependent on three main players, which are Rogers, Bell and Telus? We find ourselves on a day like today with something major and a quarter of Canadian Internet traffic is down,” said Mr. Sauvé.

The crisis will have consequences for Rogers, but will also cause significant financial losses for many merchants since the Interac payment was out of service.
