“I’m a little shy. I won’t say much…Thank you.”

Professor Huh was the first Korean to receive the Fields Medal in recognition of his achievements in solving long-standing problems in mathematics such as ‘lead guessing’ and ‘rota guessing’.

“Korea’s mathematicians have been making remarkable achievements recently,” he said, saying, “I’m just one of those many.”

In particular, he encouraged his juniors by mentioning experiences that were different from conventional wisdom, such as ‘mathematics requires perseverance’ and ‘must be consistent’.

“I think it’s very important to be able to go sometimes and give up when it’s appropriate. Rather than obsessing over it, be kind to yourself and go in a fun way…”

Professor Huh, who spends the summer in Korea, such as having a lecture at the Academy of Advanced Sciences next week, was asked regarding a specific schedule, and he answered:

[허준이/교수]

“I decided to go to Jeju Island with my parents. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m working at the Higher Science Academy during the summer, so interaction with researchers is probably the main thing…”
