The United States is deeply shocked by the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday.
US President Joe Biden expressed his dissatisfaction with the assassination of Abe, describing him as the hero of the US-Japan alliance that cares deeply regarding the Japanese people and democracy. This is a tragedy for Japan and everyone who knew him. “Even at the moment when he was attacked, he was busy with democratic work.”
In turn, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken described Abe’s assassination as “shocking” and “extremely disturbing”, describing him as a leader of great vision and an extraordinary partner to the United States.
Blinken made these statements at the beginning of a tripartite meeting with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty foreign ministers meeting in Bali, Indonesia.
For the United States, Blinken said, Abe “was an exceptional partner and someone who was clearly a great leader.”
He added that Abe had taken the US-Japan relationship to “new heights” during his time in office.
The US secretary described Abe’s death as “a loss for Japan and a loss for the world.”
