Canada recorded, in May 2022, its largest trade surplus in 14 years, with 5.3 billion dollars, an official source announced on Thursday.

This is what emerges from a press release posted on Thursday by the federal agency “Statistics Canada., on its electronic site.

This increase is motivated, says “Statistics Canada”, is due, in large part to the combination of two factors. These are rising energy prices and falling imports.

It should be remembered that Canada is the fourth oil exporting country in the world.

In addition, the trade surplus rose from 2.2 billion dollars in April to 5.3 billion in May, specifies the Agency.

As for exports, they increased by 4.1% in May to reach 68.4 billion dollars.

Detailing this figure, the Government Agency noted that “exports of energy products grew by 5.7%, those of crude oil and bitumen increased by 9.2%, stimulated by higher prices, and those of aircraft and other transportation equipment and parts up 34.2%”.

“Ores and non-metallic minerals exports climbed 17.2%, fueled by potash exports which jumped 34.9%, notably due to a strong increase in exports to Brazil”, continues the report. communicated.

For their part, imports fell, during the same period (May), by 0.7% in May to stand at $63.1 billion.
