The pianist Antonio Farao, who was born in Rome in 1965, had and still has very prominent American admirers: both his keyboard colleague Kenny Kirkland, who died much too early, and Herbie Hancock, expressed their enthusiasm for Farao’s playing. And both left their mark there.
In addition to Farao’s flawless technique, his swing feeling is particularly noteworthy, which is American through and through. On September 6, 2021, Antonio Farao performed in the classical piano trio format together with the Afro-American double bass player Ameen Saleem and the German drummer Guido May in Oberhausen, Germany, at the Ruhr Piano Festival. In addition to original compositions, there were also two jazz standards to be heard: “Seven Steps to Heaven” and John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” – both versions at breakneck speeds.
