Hyundai Motor Company announced that the ‘IONIQ 6’ achieved a CD (Drag Coefficient) of 0.21, which is the lowest aerodynamic coefficient among its all-time models released so far.
The aerodynamic performance of a vehicle is regarded as one of the important indicators for evaluating product competitiveness as it has a significant effect on vehicle performance such as power performance, fuel (electric energy) consumption efficiency, driving stability, and driving noise (wind noise). In particular, as we enter the era of electric vehicles, the relationship between cars and aerodynamics is becoming more important as the competition to secure a better mileage with a single charge intensifies.
The aerodynamic coefficient of 0.21 achieved by the IONIQ 6 is at the top level among existing electric vehicles, which greatly contributed to the increase in mileage.
Hyundai Motor Company carried out design and engineering with the goal of ‘achieving the best aerodynamic performance’ from the initial stage of the development of the IONIQ 6 by gathering the strength of the various departments of the research center, centering on the Hyundai Design Center and the Vehicle Performance Development Center.
The rear spoiler is the part that contributes the most to the improvement of the aerodynamic performance of the Ioniq 6, and serves to simultaneously reduce drag, which means air resistance, and lift, which is the force that lifts the vehicle up.
By letting the wind flowing through the roof flow backwards, it controls drag and minimizes the vortex at the tip of the spoiler. The winglet applied to the side of the rear spoiler is a technology applied in the opposite direction by borrowing a shape that is folded upwards from the tip of an airplane wing, effectively arranging the eddy currents that occur on the side of the vehicle.
The IONIQ 6 itself has a streamlined shape like the wing of an airplane, so when running fast, lift is generated aerodynamically by the difference in pressure between the top and bottom of the vehicle. At this time, the downforce generated by the rear spoiler stably holds the rear of the vehicle, thereby reducing lift even at the moment of driving at high speed to ensure driving stability.
A Hyundai Motor official said, “As a result of developing the IONIQ 6 with a focus on functional design that combines the creative ideas of aerodynamic researchers with a streamlined aesthetic design, it was able to achieve the lowest coefficient of aerodynamics among Hyundai Motor’s all-time models.” Numerous researchers have put great effort into developing it with the goal of realizing functional beauty that can run far away.”
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company plans to unveil the detailed product characteristics of the Ioniq 6 on July 14 and show the actual appearance of the Ioniq 6 for the first time in front of domestic customers who visited the ‘2022 Busan Motor Show’.
