Thunderstorms flood the streets

Hail and driftwood in the Ybrig

The thunderstorm that broke out over Schwyz and the surrounding area following 4 p.m. on Monday followingnoon was short but powerful. By the evening, damage defenses had to move out in the canton, including in Arth, Rothenthurm and in Ybrig.

On the H8 between Sattel and Rothenthurm, rainwater gushed from the mountain across the meadows onto the SOB route and onto the road. At Biberegg, the road was covered with a film of water. But even the fountains of the cars in the evening rush hour might not affect the flow of traffic. In the village of Rothenthurm, the fire brigade was called out for a water rescue operation in a commercial enterprise.

The radar data from Kachelmannwetter meanwhile shows that it actually rained the most in the Rothenthurm area and especially in the Ybrig. According to the Kachelmann radar, hailstones of almost one centimeter in size hit the ground in Unteriberg. The Unteriberg fire brigade responded to several severe weather reports and was still on duty in the evening hours. Videos from readers show the Sihl near Studen, which is carrying masses of driftwood towards the Sihlsee, with streams forming spontaneously on the slopes.

In the Schwyz basin, the amounts of precipitation were comparatively moderate. The “Bote” weather station in Schwyz measured a rainfall of 8.2 liters per square meter between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. today. Meteorologists speak of heavy precipitation from 10 liters per square meter within 24 hours. (gh)
