Nearly a third of Canadians share their travel plans on social media, posing a significant risk to their home security, according to a Leger survey conducted for Allstate Insurance Company.
Survey results reveal that 29% of Canadians who are active on social media post details of their vacation before or during their trip, and that percentage jumps to 46% among those aged 18-34.
Among the respondents who share this information, 10% do so before their trip, to share their plans, and 24% do so during the trip.
“Such practices pose a significant risk to home security by telling everyone that their home will be left unattended, making it more vulnerable to burglaries,” Allstate said.
Provincially, 28% of Quebecers say they usually post on social media before or during their trip.
Additionally, 8% say they would rather post content from their trip on social media than keep their home safe.
“It can be very tempting to post this ‘post-pandemic travel selfie,’ but it might also direct unwanted visitors to your residence and pose a risk of burglary,” said Melissa Marquis, senior director of business development at Allstate, per communicated.
“We’re asking Canadians to think twice before posting that stunning beach selfie or sunset photo on social media.
Do it rather following you return from vacation, otherwise you risk drawing attention to the fact that there is no one at home, ”added Ms. Marquis.
The survey was conducted among 1,534 Canadians, between May 6 and May 9, 2022.
