Anticipation, respect for safety distances…good behavior to adopt on the road to reduce your fuel bill

Prices at the pump have been climbing steadily for several weeks. In Overseas France, this increase, which is combined with inflation for the rest of daily life products, weighs heavily on consumers’ wallets. But there are tricks to make the price increase less impactful. In terms of fuel, this is played out on the road, simply by having appropriate behavior.

More than a trick eco-driving or economical drivingthis is the behavior to adopt behind the wheel according to Valérie Bonet, speaker on specific driving services within a training center located in Rémire-Montjoly.

In particular, this involves l’anticipation. By anticipating, the motorist brakes much less, in fact respects the safety distances and thereby reduces his fuel consumption.
Indeed, untimely braking leads to as many restarts and each restart involves high consumption.
Thus, instead of stopping suddenly, and suffering the behavior of the driver in front, the driver will let the vehicle “slide” at idle, consumption will be almost nil.
The start/stop process is therefore to be avoided.

When you see in the distance that the light is red, do not accelerate to brake just in front of the light and restart a few seconds later, let the vehicle slide quietly. On the other hand, you have to stop at the stop sign, I remind you that it is an obligation.

It is also necessary avoid unnecessary acceleration by adopting fluid eco-driving and using the cruise control wisely.

Another point not to be overlooked: tire pressure. It must be checked regularly because a pressure of 0.5 bars less means 5% more fuel consumption. 1 bar less is 10% more consumption.

  • Only use the air conditioning on long journeys or in very hot weather.
  • Do not overload the vehicle
  • Maintain the vehicle well. Indeed, a clogged air filter, faulty or worn spark plugs or an undone oil change can cause an increase in fuel consumption of up to 20%.

By adopting a few very simple gestures, it is possible to save 10 to 20% of fuel.
