Geneva airport: First weekend of vacation: “There were people, but it was fluid”

That’s it. The school holidays have started. A crowd of travelers flocked to Geneva airport throughout the weekend. On Friday, nearly 46,800 passengers boarded, or 21% less than in 2019. On Saturday, there were as many to fly away. On Sunday, according to data available at 4:30 p.m., some 51,470 people flew (-12% compared to 2019). Figures slightly below forecasts, but nevertheless “very satisfactory”, estimates the management of Cointrin. “People were there. There were a lot of people, but it was fluid,” says Taline Abdel Nour, spokesperson for Genève Aéroport.

While Saturday and Sunday went off without a hitch, Friday was marked by several delays. Blame it on four abandoned bags. “Who says forgotten suitcase, says suspicious package requiring special treatment with the closure of an area of the airport. Unsurprisingly, this impacted operations, which were considerably slowed down from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., “explains the communicator. For the same reason, train traffic between Cointrin and Geneva station was interrupted for an hour that day.

Some 54 flights (26 departures and 28 arrivals) were canceled between Friday and Sunday. “Given all the problems encountered in European airports (strike, staff shortages, social movements), this remains a reasonable figure that is not out of the ordinary,” said Taline Abdel Nour.
