Sharks are on the increase in Florida, and so are attacks, like a young woman who was the victim.
A 17-year-old American girl fishing for clams in the Gulf of Mexico, northwest of Florida, was attacked in the right leg by a wild shark. The beast initially released its victim, before resuming the assault a second time.
The young woman’s brother, a 22-year-old firefighter, then fought with the animal to try to free his sister from its claws, and managed to scare him away.
He then carried his sister onto the boat and gave her first aid before she was taken to hospital. We do not know for the moment if it will be possible to treat his leg.
According to several experts, it would seem that “there is no more at the moment, but we bring them more”, explains Marie Poupart, collaborator of TVA in Florida.
New technologies and technical advances make it possible to better reference and calculate the number of incidents.
It is nevertheless in Florida that we find the most attacks since “in 2020-21, there were 73 shark attacks in the world, including 47 in the United States, and of these 47 attacks, 28 were in Florida,” she added.
Several measures must be taken into consideration in order to avoid being attacked:
1) Never swim alone
2) Always swim close to the beach
3) Do not swim early in the morning or late at night
4) Do not swim near schools of fish
5) Do not wear jewelry
In the event of an attack, you must:
1) Grade eye contact
2) Slowly get out of the water
3) Hit him on the muzzle
