Storm Bonnie threatens Nicaragua and Costa Rica with muddy floods

The US National Hurricane Center warned of the danger of floods and mudslides caused by Tropical Storm Bonnie in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, where the storm made landfall near their borders on Friday night.
The center predicted heavy rains throughout Nicaragua and Costa Rica, along with life-threatening floods and mudslides.
The media quoted the center as saying that the storm is likely to weaken following crossing land, to intensify once more over the eastern Pacific Ocean today, Sunday, noting that the storm was loaded with winds approaching 85 kilometers per hour with higher gusts before reaching land.
In Asia, the death toll from the landslide that buried a railway construction site in northeastern India has risen to 25, while regarding forty people are still missing, the army announced on Saturday.
Two days following the disaster, rescuers continued to search for possible survivors at the disaster site, a railway construction site buried under mud and rocks in Manipur state, but their efforts were hampered by bad weather.
Most of the victims were reservists in the ground forces who were working on a railway construction project in the state of Manipur.
Army spokesman Sumit Kumar Sharma said a relief team was digging in the mud and lifting rocks in search of survivors. The head of the local authority in Manipur state wrote that “the loss of lives, including members of our armed forces, is very sad,” noting that more than fifty people are still missing.
The isolated northeastern region of India has seen torrential rains in recent weeks, causing landslides and floods.
At least ten people were killed at the beginning of the year by floods and landslides following heavy rains in several parts of India.
Experts believe that climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events in the world, including in India.
Dams, deforestation and development projects in this country contribute to the increasingly serious disasters. (agencies)
