And suddenly a world collapses for Noe van Messel (20). On Friday morning, the talented Schwinger from Central Switzerland was diagnosed with glandular fever. A punch in the stomach for the 110-kilo chunk, who sensationally secured the Stoss wreath in 2019 at the age of 17. Only the two top shots, Joel Wicki and Pirmin Reichmuth, were ahead of the Swiss with Dutch roots. From 0 to 100 in six gears.
And since then? Not much. The devastating record of the 1.91 m giant: zero wreaths, a cruciate ligament tear, two meniscus tears. He missed the start of the season due to injury. Now he was on his way back, wanted to celebrate his Kranzfest comeback on Sunday at the Central Swiss Wrestling Festival in Ennetbürgen NW. And now this!

Season highlight in danger
Van Messel is devastated: “This devastating diagnosis so shortly before the return hurts brutally.” The economics student doesn’t feel bad physically, but “the lymph glands in his neck are very swollen.” So far, the talent has not felt much of the obligatory tiredness that usually occurs with this disease.
There is no way around a break of several weeks. This makes it clear: His participation in the ISAF and a week later on the Rigi will fall through. On top of that, the talent from Oberägeri is even threatened with the end of the Federal Wrestling Festival at the end of August.
Central Switzerland boss takes a stand
Because: As early as July 5th, the Central Swiss Wrestling Association (ISV) will make a first selection for the major event in Pratteln. The remaining starting places – a total of 85 in number – will be allocated at a later date.
Thedy Waser, the technical director of the ISV, explains: “If Noe van Messel can’t contest a wrestling festival before the ESAF, then it will be very difficult for him to participate.” The race once morest time is on. Can van Messel win it?
