Recordings of concerts, operas, musicals or ballet performances can be viewed on Rathausplatz for 65 days with free admission. As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, the 32nd Film Festival will start on July 2nd with the benefit concert “We stand with Ukraine”, which took place in March at the Ernst Happel Stadium.
One day later, the production of the Vienna State Opera “Il Turco in Italia” will even be broadcast live at the Film Festival with a time delay. National and international concert recordings from opera, classical, pop, rock, jazz, musicals and world music are shown on the 300 square meter screen until the beginning of September. A total of 3,000 guests can be seated in the film area at the same time.
Rock concerts and ballet performances
Also on the program are, for example, the recordings of the Coldplay concert in São Paulo from 2017 or the Rolling Stones concert in Havana, which was played in front of 450,000 spectators. Concerts by deceased artists such as Amy Winehouse and Falco are also shown. Jazz lovers can watch the recording of the Bayfron Jazz Festival held in Miami in 2021 and featuring Afro-Cuban and Latin American music.
For opera fans, the State Opera productions “Carmen”, “Turandot” and “Fledermaus” will be presented. Ballet performances and musicals can also be viewed at Rathausplatz. Among other things, the “Swan Lake” performance from the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the ballet “Sylvia” with the Vienna State Ballet and the musical “I Am from Austria” will be shown. The January 2022 New Year’s Concert with conductor Daniel Barenboim is on the program on July 19.
Street food from all over the world
This year there are a total of 23 gastronomy stands offering Austrian and international dishes. In addition to steaks and burgers, you can choose between Italian pinsa, Korean corn dogs, Spanish paella or Vietnamese summer rolls. Local culinary delights include spaetzle variations, grilled sausages, Kaiserschmarrn and apricot dumplings. The food stands are open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.
Open-air cinema at Karlsplatz and in the MQ
The film and open-air cinema festival “Kaleidoskop” started on July 1st at Karlsplatz. A total of 17 films will be shown. On each film evening, a different city is presented and a supporting program for the respective film is shown. “CineCollective” curates Austrian and international feature films and documentaries. The program includes, for example, the French film “Que Dieu te protège (May God Be With You)” by Cléo Chohen and the Austrian production “Krai” by Aleksey Lapin.
The open-air cinema “Frameout” can be visited from July 8th in the Museumsquartier with free admission and shows documentaries and independent films. Every Friday and Saturday, the MQ main courtyard and the courtyard by the boule alley are shown with short and feature film programs. Cinema as a public place of debate is the motto of the event. Frameout opens with Luana Bajrami’s film The Hill Where Lionesses Roar.
