While the game Return to Monkey Island is finally announced during the Nintendo direct Mini in temporary exclusivity on Nintendo Switch, the creator had to face many criticisms and personal attacks on the visual style of the new game which is not unanimous.
No more desire for the future?
The game was highly anticipated, as it marks the return of Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman following more than 30 years of absence. The interest of the players was there.
The creator held a personal blog in order to inform regarding his work and that of the studio in charge of the game Return to Monkey Island. Nevertheless, following the surges of hatred and frustration in the comments that can be seen on his blog:
- waited 30 years for this.
- I saw this bad graphic style.
- it cannot be saved.
- I will definitely not buy it
Ron Gilbert said he no longer wanted to share anything regarding the game and that he no longer wanted to.
I close the comments. People are just being mean and I have to delete the personal attack comments. “, he wrote. It’s an incredible game and everyone in the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it, but don’t mess it up. I will no longer post regarding the game. The joy of sharing has been taken away from me.
Bang up job, everybody.
(I’ve seen a lot of passionate but polite/polite-adjacent discussion going on, but the comments on Ron’s blog were a total shitshow.) pic.twitter.com/BUBoPdU1fS

These personal attacks are not trivial in the world of video games. Indeed, some creators have been able to denounce the bad behavior of some “fans” vis-à-vis their game on purely personal criteria such as the wave of hatred on The Last of Us 2 for example.
