Ons, who reached second place in the world rankings with the start of the tournament and is the best in her career, is one of the leading contenders for the title following winning the Berlin title on grass two weeks ago.
The 27-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last year by finishing in the first round when she needed just 54 minutes to crush Myriam Björklund, appeared to be off. Ons won the previous two matches once morest her 29-year-old Polish opponent, and played fiercely from the start.
After exchanging early breaks, Anas managed to find weaknesses in the performance of Kawa, who is playing on grass for the first time, and broke her serve in the ninth game before taking the set in the next game.
Kawa appeared to suffer from a shoulder injury in the second set, and asked for treatment time when she was 3-0 down, and did not do much when she returned to the field. Ons stumbled when the match was decided, as she needed five chances to end the match. Ons, who this week became the best-ranked African player ever, will play France’s Diane Barry, ranked 77th in the world, for a place in the fourth round.
