Free announces the termination of one of its services to its Freebox subscribers

Free’s obsolete Ring Back Tone service will end on September 30. A stop already effective for some subscribers.

It’s the end of the adventure following 17 years of existence. “We inform you that our services are evolving and, in this context, our Ring Back Tone service will stop on September 30, 2022”it is with this terse message that Free is currently announcing by email to its Freebox subscribers the end of this option launched in January 2005, a first in France at the time.

Proposed for launch in partnership with Universal Music, this feature allows Freebox subscribers to replace their ring tone with music, a joke or the audio file of their choice when a correspondent tries to reach them on their landline. According to our findings, the Ring Back Tone has already disappeared from the subscriber space of Freeusers who have never used it. Present in the Telephony section, this service is therefore still available for 3 months for those who have activated it.

In its e-mail, the operator invites its subscribers to discover the other services offered such as double call, call filtering and call transfer. The discontinuation of Ring Back Tone follows the termination of another old service in 2019, SIP. Launched in 2007, the “Session Initiation Protocol” allowed all Free users to use the Freebox telephone line (at the Free telephony rates in force) from any computer connected to the Internet or from a SIP-compatible telephone (iPhone ).
