China’s leading automotive lithium-ion battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has unveiled a new battery that enables electric vehicles to have a range of over 1,000 km on a single charge. Using the third generation of Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology, the battery dubbed Qilin, or CTP 3.0 battery, has a volume utilization efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg for ternary battery systems, giving it the highest level of integration in the world, according to CATL.
The battery is named following a legendary creature called “Qilin” in Chinese mythology, reports the Xinhua news agency. Qilin batteries are expected to go into mass production and hit the market in 2023, according to CATL.
By integrating the cells directly into packs without modules, CTP technology improves the energy density of the system, simplifies manufacturing and helps reduce costs. In addition, the CTP 3.0 battery has improvements in battery life, safety, charging speed and low temperature performance.
The reliability of the product throughout its life cycle and its resistance to shock and vibration are improved by the integrated energy unit, which is composed of the cell and a multifunctional elastic intermediate layer.
The battery features thermal stability and safety and is therefore compatible with higher energy density materials in product upgrades.
Under extreme circumstances, the cell can be cooled rapidly, preventing abnormal heat conduction between cells. Recharging only takes 10 minutes in fast mode.
