Peugeot 408, the post-SUV… – L’Orient Today

Peugeot (brand of the Stellantis automotive group) unveiled the 408 last Wednesday in Paris, a new car with an unprecedented silhouette – known as the “fastback sedan” – and intended for motorists tired of the omnipresence of SUVs.

Models derived from 4 x 4s have been steadily gaining ground for several years, reaching a record 46% of new car registrations last May in France, now tied with classic sedans. This enthusiasm is also reflected in a standardization of vehicles on the roads, to the chagrin of buyers looking for originality. Some customers of the new Peugeot 408 “want a more original and innovative silhouette than a compact SUV, which they consider too common or too family friendly”, explained the brand.

Significantly lower and longer than a Peugeot 3008 SUV, the car sports a very sloping rear coupe that contrasts with current codes. Recognizable at the rear by its “cat’s ears”, two aerodynamic protrusions, as well as its wide, gently sloping glazed tailgate, it combines the elegance and sportiness of a box saloon with the assets of a station wagon. . “It’s a new species in the automobile. Whatever the angle from which we look at it, we discover unexpected shapes,” underlined Mathias Hossann, style director at Peugeot. But if it breaks with SUVs, the 408 nevertheless retains some finery that remains popular with customers: raised ground clearance, large wheels and black plastic protections around the fenders, on the sides and the rear bumper. “It’s a bit the best of both worlds”, summarizes Michaël Trouvé, head of design for the brand.

The car, manufactured in Mulhouse in France, will be launched in early 2023 in Europe and then from mid-2023 in China, where it will be assembled in Chengdu. Available with petrol and hybrid (petrol-electric) engines, it will later be available in purely electric mode.
