The 135th edition of Wimbledon, the only Grand Slam on the grass court, begins today. Leading players in professional tennis have arrived in London to give wings to their Grand Slam dreams. On the opening day, defending champion Novak Djokovic will face South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo, while two-time champion Andy Murray will face James Duckworth.
Local favorite Emma Radukanu will also compete in center court today. Emma will face Alison van Uyitwank of Belgium. Other top-10 seeds playing in the first round on the first day of Wimbledon 2022 include Carlos Alcaras, Caspar Rudd, Hubert Harkas, Ons Jabber and Annette Conteweit. However, Roger Federer, Alexis Swarovski and Naomi Osaka have all been ruled out with injuries.
Despite Kovid’s challenges, the tournament has been controversial this time around due to its political stance. Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from the tournament due to Russia’s occupation of Ukraine. With this, the number one player in the men’s category, including Russia’s Danil Medvedev, will not be able to play. In addition to Danil Medvedev, Victoria Azarenka, Ariana Sabaleta and Andrei Rublev are also banned. Due to this, the ranking points from the tournament have been cut.
The Wimbledon Championships start on Monday, June 27 and end on Sunday, July 10. The All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, UK will host the championship. Matches start at 11 a.m. local time on most show courts. Games will begin at Center Court at 1:30 pm local time and 1 pm local time on Court 1.
