From this Friday there is a real 90s classic in the portfolio of the mouse streaming service: The John Grisham legal thriller “The Jury” with Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey can now be accessed on Disney +.
Systemic racism, the injustice of the American judicial system and racist groups who use violence and intimidation to enforce the “law” on the city streets: “The Jury” is still highly explosive material today and unfortunately has lost none of its topicality. This is particularly tragic when you consider that the film was released in cinemas in 1996 – more than 25 years ago (!). Anyone who hasn’t seen this nerve-wracking legal drama can now do so on Disney+, where the film is included in the subscription from today.

“The Jury” is high tension in the courtroom, which mercilessly reveals the weaknesses of an impressionable justice system and at the same time one of the best John Grisham films ever. Character mime Matthew McConaughey (“Killer Joe”) makes his leading actor debut. With Nick Fury actor Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock (“Speed”), Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty”) and the father-son team Donald (“Space Cowboys”) and Kiefer Sutherland (“24”) the film is also excellently cast, right down to the supporting roles.
That’s what “The Jury” is regarding
In the city of Clanton, Mississippi, two white men raped a 10-year-old girl. So that their deed does not fly up, they try to kill their victim – but fail in the act. Believing that the men are not being punished severely because of the color of their skin, Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson), the girl’s father, kills the perpetrators on their way into the courthouse and also meets an innocent police officer – threatening him the death penalty.
The young local lawyer Jake Tyler Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) takes over the defense of the man because he feels responsible for the events – Carl Lee Hailey had indirectly announced the crime to him the night before. In this almost hopeless case, the underdog lawyer must stand up to the Ku Klux Klan’s attempts to intimidate him and the shrewd district attorney Rufus Buckley (Kevin Spacey) in order to save his client’s life.
