The Spanish Popular Party wants to integrate Sebta and Mélilia into NATO

The Spanish Popular Party continues to surf on sensitive topics to increase its chances in the 2023 legislative elections. Once once more, it raises the issue of the security of the two occupied presidents Sebta and Mélilia. The PP is finalizing the details of a proposal for a State pact on defense and security which will be transferred this week to all parliamentary groups in Congress in view of the NATO Summit, which will take place on June 29 and 30 2022 in Madrid. “In view of the next NATO summit, we are going to ask the rest of the political forces to join us in asking for a guarantee of protection for the entire national territory, in particular non-peninsular territories, such as Sebta and Mélilia” . This was stated by the deputy secretary of the PP, Esteban González Pons, on Monday, June 13, 2022 on the occasion of the steering committee held by the party leadership in Genoa, reports the Spanish media 20minutos.es.

The reference to “non-peninsular territories” includes, in particular, Sebta and Mélilia. That is, their inclusion in Article 5 of the Atlantic Alliance according to which an attack on the territory “shall be considered as an attack directed once morest each of them”. “Whatever EU border is, it must be protected by NATO,” said González Pons. A proposal that was put forward by the leader of the PP on May 9 during the celebration of Europe Day.

“An enlarged NATO”, hears the PP with this proposal, which does not limit the Alliance to a “military pact” because it is also “a political pact”.
