Macbook Air M2: This is Apple’s new notebook

The wedge shape is history, at least with the Macbook Air M2. However, the older, wedge-shaped model with the M1 chip is still available. The new Macbook Air M2 is now consistently thin and only 1.13 cm high. The footprint remains the same as the predecessor with very small deviations, but the weight has dropped a little bit and is now at 1.24 kg.

You can still choose between silver and space gray for the colors, but instead of gold there are now the colors polar star and midnight. And what also immediately catches the eye: the Magsafe 3 connection for the power supply on the left side. As before, there are still two USB-C ports, and the headphones can be plugged in on the right side.

After unfolding, there is no white border around the display, as some speculators had suspected, but a black one, as before. However, it is thinner than before, so that the 13.6-inch screen might be slightly larger. And like the Macbook Pro 14 inch and 16 inch, there is a notch for the Facetime camera with finally 1080p. The maximum brightness of the display has also improved, it is now 500 nits, and the monitor can display more colors than the previous model.

On the keyboard, Apple has made the function keys and the fingerprint sensor the same size as the other keys. All keys are black, the gaps have the respective housing color.

Inside, Apple has changed a lot. The highlight is the new M2 chip, which is available in two variants: each with 8 CPU cores and either 8 or 10 GPU cores. Both variants have an integrated media engine and, as before, have a neural engine. You can find out more regarding the M2 here. The speakers are also new, of which there are now four, and they support 3D audio for Dolby Atmos. You can’t hear anything from the fan, because it’s still not there.

The battery has grown to 52.6 Wh, but the runtimes specified by Apple have not changed compared to the predecessor: 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of surfing. The equipment with working memory and SSD in the basic versions has not changed either. 8GB storage and either 256GB or 512GB SSD. In addition to 16 GB of RAM, you can now also order 24 GB.

Apple has increased the prices considerably. The basic model with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU costs €1499. The other basic model has a 10-core GPU and instead of a 256 GB SSD an SSD with 512 GB, but you have to shell out €1849 for that. In addition, you get a slightly larger power adapter with 35 W and two USB-C ports.

More RAM costs €230 (16 GB) or €460 (24 GB) for both models. The SSD upgrade also comes in increments of €230, from 256GB to 512GB and from 512GB to 1TB. 2 TB then cost twice as much, namely 460 €. So the fun is not cheap. The previous model stays in the price list at €1199, but with the small M1 that only has a 7-core GPU. 8-core GPU is no longer an option.

The new Macbooks Air M2 can be ordered from July, Apple does not give a more precise date. (Macwelt)
