The US Special Envoy to the indirect negotiations between Lebanon and the Zionist entity on defining the maritime borders, Amos Hochstein, took advantage of his visit to Lebanon to practice the policy of blackmail followed by his country in dealing with Lebanon with what he called “guarantees” for the implementation of the energy contraction agreement from Jordan and Egypt, and pressure to secure international funding for that .
Ascending on foot to the fifth floor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the American envoy arrived… following waiting in vain for the electricity to return to the ministry elevator. What the Lebanese are suffering electrically as a result of the US blockade, Amos Hochstein and Dorothy Shay, the owners of the promises of enlistment from Jordan and Egypt, tasted for months until their meeting on Monday with Energy Minister Walid Fayyad.
The American talk regarding giving guarantees is unclear regarding the timing, a scenario that is repeated every time. In August 2020, the American ambassador was provoked by Hezbollah’s announcement that it would import Iranian diesel, so Lebanon made the country’s decision to import energy from Jordan a priority.
Two months and more than the signing of the agreement with Jordan, but there is no electricity or energy, despite the completion of all technical matters, waiting for an exemption from Caesar’s law. Negotiations with Egypt, and almost an agreement without any signature yet, and the reason for the delay is the same.
What makes matters worse, is that the American is trying to enter the line of the Lebanon-Iraq agreement, promising to intervene to extend it following next September… an insult to Iraq’s sovereignty, and blackmailing the Lebanese out of brandishing the agreement as a pressure card.
For regarding ten months, the American tried and is still investing in the electricity file with Lebanon as a pressure card, sometimes with empty promises, and at other times with political pressures.
