The famous singer Justin Bieber revealed, in a video on his account via Instagram, that he had a paralysis in the face following canceling his shows this week.
The 28-year-old Bieber said his paralysis was caused by Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome. He said, “As you can see, this eye does not blink. I cannot smile on this side of my face…There is complete paralysis on this side of the face.”
He continued, “It is this virus that affects the nerve in the ear and the nerves of the face and causes complete paralysis,” pointing to the right side of his face.
Bieber wished his followers to be patient, pointing out that he is currently unable to perform the performances. He confirmed that he is undergoing the necessary treatments and exercises, but he does not know how long the recovery period will take.
And early last week, it was announced that three shows from Bieber’s “global justice” tour, which began in February, have been postponed.
But what is “Ramsay Hunt syndrome”?
This syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by paralysis of the facial nerve (facial palsy) and a rash affecting the ear or mouth.
Ramsay Hunt syndrome occurs following infection with the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox and herpes zoster (Zona).
The incubation period for the virus can last for decades in the body of a person who had chickenpox as a child. Reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus causes shingles and in some cases it develops into Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
Treatment usually includes Ramsay-Hunt syndrome with antiviral medications. Rehabilitation also allows the patient to recover, especially if it begins in the early periods of the onset of the disease.
