The Detroit Tigers placed Venezuelan left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez on the restricted list.
Tigers general manager Al Avila announced Monday that Rodriguez had informed the team that he would not be reinstating due to personal matters.
The Tigers signed Rodriguez to a five-year, $77 million deal last November, banking on his getting back into shape, but he and the team have struggled this season.
Rodriguez is 1-3 with a 4.38 ERA in eight starts. The Tigers, who were aggressive in free agency in hopes of competing in the AL Central, have been one of the worst ninths in the majors this season.
The 29-year-old Venezuelan spent his first six seasons with the Boston Red Sox and is 65-42 with a 4.17 ERA in his career. He missed the shortened 2020 season with myocarditis caused by COVID-19.
Rodriguez is 1-1 in three playoff starts, beating Houston in Game 3 of the 2021 ALCS following losing to Tampa Bay in Game 1 of the Division Series and going out without a decision in Game 4. This helped him become a prized free agent.
Rodriguez hasn’t seen action with the Tigers since May 18, when he left the game once morest Tampa Bay in the first inning with rib soreness.
