The BBC announced on Monday that two lifeless bodies had been discovered in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, during the search to find the trace of Dom Phillips, British journalist collaborating in particular with The Guardian, The Washington Post and The New York Times, and Bruno Pereira, an expert with the Brazilian government agency for indigenous affairs. The two men, ages 57 and 41 respectively, have been missing since June 5. They were traveling together in the Amazon with the aim of collecting testimonies to write a book on environmental conservation.
On Saturday, personal items of the missing (clothes, bag, shoes) had already been discovered, followinga man considered suspicious in the disappearance had been arrested a few days before.
And it was Sunday that the team of experts deployed to solve the mysterious case made the discovery, last night, of two lifeless bodies, found attached to a tree in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The bodies have not yet been identified, but they might be those of the journalist and his companion.
According to Brazilian local authorities, Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira were victims of intimidation and threats during their journey, in particular from loggers and miners who work illegally in the Amazon, reports Het Laatste Nieuws.
