G Venugopal arrived in Chennai to sing the song ‘Onnamragam Padi’ for P Padmarajan’s movie Thoovanathumpikal. I stayed there for 13 days and learned to sing. The recording is over. Babu, a relative of music director Perumbavoor G Raveendranath, took Venu to music minister Raveendran’s house and introduced him. Venu’s song in Thoovanathumpi was also heard. Raveendran Mash wants to hear the singing live. Venugopal sang the opening song ‘Koi Nahihe’.
A week later, Venugopal received a call from Raveendran. Arrived in Chennai and practiced at Keerthi Lodge. Recording the next day following a day of practice. Venu sang the Hindola song ‘Chandanamani Vaathil Pathi Chari’ written by Ezhacheri Ramachandran in one take. The flute was played by the late composer VC George. Violin B Sasikumar. Usha, who studied MA Music at Thiruvananthapuram Women’s College, sang for the film ‘Chandanamani Vaathil’. However, without the orchestra, a few lines of the song with Venugopal’s voice were included in the film. Two years following the release of the film, All India Radio’s ‘Chandanamani Vaathil’, which was the most popular song at that time, did not air. Ezhacheri Ramachandran called Venugopal one day and brought the matter to his notice. Later, ‘Chandanamani Vaathil’ recorded in Venugopal’s voice through All India Radio reached the hearts of the Malayalees. It became one of the greatest super hit songs of all time. ‘Chandanamani Vaathil’, which was recorded in the voice of Usha who sang the same song, is still closed.
