Brazilian police have opened an investigation following Willian, a former Chelsea star who is returning to play for local Corinthians, received threatening messages online threatening to kill him with bullets and knives.
The Sao Paulo police arrested a 21-year-old following making threats once morest his wife and two young daughters. Police Commissioner Cesar Saad said the person who wrote the letters had been charged and who claimed he did not expect the threats to be taken seriously.
Willian and his teammates Cassio and Paulinho were subjected to online threats following losing the Copa Libertadores title to the Bolivian team Always Reddy last April, but when the accused said to Willian in his letters that his two daughters would not be safe at their school, he decided to inform the police immediately.
Willian, 33, spent 7 years in the English Premier League following his transfer from Ukrainian club Anzhi Makhachkala for 30 million pounds in 2013 and won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League title with Chelsea, before moving to Arsenal when his contract with the Blues expired. He left no imprint and moved back to Brazil. The latest incident is a wake-up call for samba stars wishing to return to playing in the Brazilian League, where the competition between team fans increases to the point of violence and riots.
