Hispanic charged in deadly shooting at Maryland factory that killed three workers

And Hispanic Maryland factory worker charged with killing three co-workers and wounding two others in shooting Thursday He was charged with dozens of felonies, including murder, authorities said Friday.

Joe Louis Esquivel, 23, of Hedgesville, West Virginiawas charged with a series of murder, attempted murder, assault and weapons charges in connection with the Smithsburg massacre, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

He was behind bars without bond Friday night, authorities said.

Esquivel went to his car to get a gun following working a full shift at Columbia Machine, Inc. on Thursday.

He returned to the concrete products factory break room and allegedly opened fire on his co-workers around 2:30 p.m., according to authorities.

After allegedly killing Mark Frey, 50; Charles Minnick Jr., 31; Joshua Wallace, 30, and seriously injuring another colleague, Esquivel fled in his Mitsubishi Eclipse before he was pulled over by state police regarding 10 miles away, police said.

Police are working near the site where Joe Esquivel opened fire in a factory, killing three people.

A shootout ensued with two Maryland State Troopers.

Esquivel allegedly wounded one of them and was shot when he returned fire, authorities said. Both were hospitalized and expected to survive.

A search of the suspected killer’s home in West Virginia turned up additional firearms, sheriffs said. The identities and conditions of the injured Columbia Machine worker were not released.
