If Apple has unveiled a plethora of new features for iPhone, it was careful not to specify that only certain models would take full advantage of them.
After the presentation of iOS 16 on Monday, the question of devices that would be able to run it. Three iPhones are discontinued by Apple, namely the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and the first generation iPhone SE. A priori, all other newer iPhones will be able to run iOS 16 and benefit from all its features. Well almost…
Indeed, all iPhone users will not be in the same boat. Apple hasn’t specified this, but depending on the model you have, not all features will be available to you. The lists below show the features exclusive to certain models. If your iPhone (or iPad) is older than the one indicated in the title, you will not be able to take advantage of these new features.
iPhone or iPad A12 Bionic or newer
- Continuity Camera : with iOS 16, Apple turns the iPhone into a webcam. By installing it above the screen of a MacBook, the iPhone takes over from the Mac’s camera.
- Recording medications with the camera : you can take a picture of a medicine box to add it to the Health Treatments menu.
- Live Text in Videos : by pausing a video, Live Text is able to identify the written text and copy/paste it. As the function is only available with photos on iPhones with A12 Bionic chip or more recent, it makes sense.
- Quick Actions with Live Text : very quickly, by pressing on a text or a telephone number present in a photo or video, we can interact with it.
- Detach the subject of a photo from its background : one of the flagship features of iOS 16. By keeping your finger pressed on the main element of an image, the iPhone automatically cuts it out and you can move it to another app.
- Insert an emoji with Siri : when you dictate an SMS to Siri, you can ask her to add an emoji.
- Hang up a call with Siri : Saying “Hey Siri, hang up the call”, it automatically does this for you.
- Siri performs better offline : With iOS 15, Siri was able to answer some requests without being connected to the Internet. These requests now seem to be more numerous.
- Review dictation function : from now on, the keyboard remains accessible during the Dictation function.
- Improved Look Up function : the Look Up function allows you to identify an animal, a plant or a place in a photo. Birds, insects and statues are now added to the list. A feature that is however not available in Belgium.
- Image search in Spotlight supports more apps : Spotlight can now spot photos in Messages, Notes and Files.
iPhone 11 or iPad A12 Bionic or newer
- Center Stage with Continuity Camera : the functionality is enabled by the ultra-wide-angle camera, which is only found on the iPhone 11 and newer. As a reminder, Center Stage allows the iPhone to always keep you in the center of the image.
- Desk View with Continuity Camera : While using the Continuity Camera, you additionally use the ultra-wide angle camera to show the contents of your desktop.
- Live Captioning : During conversations or during a video, the iPhone automatically generates subtitles.
- Live Captioning in FaceTime : During FaceTime calls, the iPhone automatically generates subtitles and even indicates who is talking.
iPhone 12 or newer
- Studio Light with Continuity Camera : During video calls, Studio Light illuminates your face while darkening the background.
iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, iPad A12Z or newer
- Detection mode in Loupe : with this accessibility function, you have access to descriptions of doors, people or images.
- Door detection in Loupe : with this function, you have access to all the information concerning an entry. The panels present, the distance from you or instructions to open it are given by the iPhone.
iPhone 13 et iPhone 13 Pro
- Foreground blurring in Portrait : In the Camera, with the Portrait tool, the iPhone can now blur areas of the foreground.
- Improved quality Cinematic mode : available exclusively on the iPhone 13, the depth of field effect is now improved, with finer details, especially around the hair.
