If there is one game that has unleashed passions this night from the opening of the Summer Game Fest, it is The Plucky Squire.
Last night, star host Geoff Keighley inaugurated his Summer Game Fest, an annual show launched in 2020 in response to an absent E3. And while the previous evening had released some images of a Elden Ring still in reserve, the third iteration naturally raised high expectations. But faced with a slew of SF productions dropped into space and the announcement of a remake of The Last of Us Part I in front of absolutely not wide-eyed, the craze quickly faded for some. It was finally at midnight that some hearts warmed to the usual short film of Devolver’s still very fit troops. Guest expected for the evening, Cult of the Lamb unleashed a summer release date and some flamboyant images. But it was ultimately another game that made jaws drop mid-game.
The Plucky Squire, la surprise Devolver
The Plucky Squire (L’écuyer malchanceux in French), it’s the surprise unsheathed by Devolver that night when many spectators had already gone to bed when the curtains of the Keighley show closed. In enchanting settings, a camera in first-person view penetrates the superbly stylized room of young Sam. On his table rests a pink book whose cover illustrates Jot, a squire. Then the pages turn, seeming to indicate that the adventure will come to life in the book. Jot moves at high speed, unleashes big swords once morest bumbling goblins, builds bridges by putting words in their place, explores bustling villages and fights a colossus with his bare hands. Then by a somewhat hazardous jump, he finds himself materialized in Sam’s world, him and all his enemies.
A look at the title’s Steam page, which you can already add to your wishlist, allows you to glean some additional details regarding the universe. The characters in the books will have to “jump between 2D and 3D realms to save their friends“. A chaos between realities ushered in by the malevolent Humgrump when he discovers he is the villain of the book, destined to lose his battle once morest the forces of good for eternity.
Who is behind the game?
This adventurous tale with the good airs ofIt Takes Two seduced not only by its colorful visuals, but also by its few similarities with The Legend of Zelda universe. The mechanics worn by this good Jot were broadly reminiscent of those of Link. On the gameplay side, The Plucky Squire also seems to offer great variations mixing action sequences, platform and mini-games.
But then who is hiding behind this revelation? All Possible Futures, a young team formed in 2019 by two game industry veterans who have already worked on the main Pokémon series or The Swords of DItto. “All Possible Futures is now ready to create that special something you didn’t know you needed“, is it indicated on their site internet. Then the connection is made: We understand that it is the new studio of James Turner, artistic director of Pokemon Sword/Shield and producer of HarmonKnight.
All Possible Futures was founded with a mission to create amazing, exceptional and beautiful original games. The kind of games that make a splash when the whole world sees and plays them; the kind of games you would be proud to have worked on.
Now let’s wait to learn more. The release of The Plucky Squire is set for the year 2023 on Xbox Series, PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.
