The Grammy Awards on Wednesday announced the addition of the Best Video Game Soundtrack category to their awards, a move that recognizes the industry and reflects the industry’s leading awards for diversity.
The award for “Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media” will be one of five new categories that will be recognized for the first time at the 65th Grammy Awards in 2023, including Best Writer and Song Composer of the Year and Best Spoken Poetry Album.
“The academy’s top priority is the effective representation of the people in the music industry it serves,” said Harvey Mason Jr., president of the Recording Academy, which includes music industry professionals, while “making sure that its rules and guidelines reflect the ever-changing music industry.”
Although the Grammy Awards did not include a video game music category, Christopher Tenn’s “Bab Yeti” for the popular strategy video game Civilization 4 won Best Distribution in 2011.
At the latest awards gala, Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman, along with 8-Bit Big Band, were crowned in the same category for their version of “Meta Knights Revenge” from the video game “Kirby Superstar.”
