Vegetable soups, tea, stew, or coffee are options that help retain body heat at low temperatures. However, it is also important to consume at least three components daily, water, protein and carbohydrates.

From the Department of Multidisciplinary Treatment of Obesity of the Hospitals de Clínicas, nutritionist Rocío Arguello spoke regarding the necessary nutrition for cold days and also for patients with respiratory diseases.

In this context, she recommended the consumption of warm dishes such as soups, vegetable broths, legumes, stews or hot drinks such as tea and coffee. They help to maintain body heat and not gain weight, but two cups of tea or coffee per day should not be exceeded.

“Hot meals are recommended to raise body temperature on cold days, especially with soups that can include plenty of vegetables, as this provides nutrient-dense vitamins. You can also add proteins, like cheese, chicken or legumes, to get lots of low-calorie fiber and nutrients,” the nutritionist explained.

She advises patients with respiratory diseases to carbohydrates such as wholemeal flour and legumes; with a fever, the protein requirement increases, so e.g. E.g. lean meat, eggs, cheese, milk, fish, especially sea fish due to its high omega-3 content, which has an anti-inflammatory effect, and healthy fats such as olive oil or that found in avocados.

Regarding chocolate, Arguello described it as a powerful antioxidant, especially when it comes to dark chocolate containing more than 70% cocoa, as it retains greater antioxidant properties, although high fat content contributes to weight gain. Therefore, it is recommended to limit the amount to one bar per day.
