Less than two days from its release, the horror title developed by Supermassive Games is already beginning to accumulate favorable reviews, praising the atmosphere and the distribution of the title. In short, it bodes well for the British studio and, more particularly, for fans of terrifying narrative adventures. Like here, at Weigh on start!

So why exactly are we looking forward to playing The Quarry? We explain this to you.

It is a spiritual sequel to Until Dawn

The latest games from Supermassive Games, including those from the Dark Pictures Anthologywere fine, but nothing quite came close to the horror adventure that made the developer famous in 2015: Until Dawn.

Borrowing (a lot) from style films slasher from the early 2000s, the title was able to brilliantly mix humor, jitters and an atmosphere that was frankly creepy at times. A nod to teenage films from a not-so-distant era, Until Dawn did not take itself seriously, while offering a frankly convincing production.

In doing so, to see the artisans of Supermassive describe The Quarry as a spiritual sequel to Until Dawn looks very promising. After the slightly shorter journeys and a little less rich in surprises of the first three parts of the Dark Pictures Anthologywe can therefore expect a more complete, daring game where each choice has more weight.

It’s a tribute to horror movies of the 80s

Nostalgic for the first Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Evil Dead and others Texas Chainsaw Massacre? The Quarry wants to be a true love letter to the horror cinema of the 80s, as much by its aesthetics as by its atmosphere, although the game takes place today.

Because let’s face it, a group of summer camp counselors who have to survive a night’s worth of being targeted by mysterious killers, it reminds us all of something!

In interview with GameSpotgame director Will Byles mentioned that the team was heavily inspired by several films from slashers classics, but also by horror feature films from other eras. All in all, even if there will be many nods to the nightmares of the 80s, there is likely to be something for everyone… provided you like to be a little scared!

There will be a dizzying number of possible endings

As in previous Supermassive titles, and especially Until Dawn, The Quarry will offer an adventure dictated by the many choices that the player will have to make during his journey. And following the somewhat more rigid narratives of the games of the Dark Pictures Anthologythe British studio seems to want to recover… and not nearly!

Selon Will Byles, The Quarry will have no less than 186 different endings, with a scenario that would exceed the 1000 page mark! Each decision will thus have a different scope, sometimes immediately influencing the player’s journey… and sometimes only having an impact at the end of the adventure.

One thing is certain, the horror game, which should take regarding ten hours to complete, risks having a gigantic potential for replayability. 186 endings, think regarding it!

A Hollywood Cast Leads The Quarry

After starring in particular Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere in Until DawnSupermassive Games does it once more with another fine line-up of actors in The Quarrywhich will definitely give the title a cinematic vibe.

After a recent return to the franchise ScreamDavid Arquette will plunge once once more into horror as the owner of the summer camp in The Quarry. Another horror regular, Ted Raimi (Sam Raimi’s brother) will play the role of the local sheriff.

Among the interpreters of the camp counselors, we will notably find Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones, Licorice Pizza), Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Brenda Song (Dollface), Evan Evagoria (Star Trek: Picard) et Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu, The Get Down).

It will be a great game to play as a couple, with friends or in a gang

Despite its slightly more single-player profile, like Until Dawn and the three parts of the Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry will obviously once once more be an excellent title to play with several people.

Why? Because there’s nothing (or almost) more fun than arguing with someone else regarding a major character decision, especially when the allotted time is running dangerously fast!

Especially that The Quarry will include different multiplayer modes, both local and online. In person, players will take turns to pass the controller and each play as a selection of characters, while online, seven other people will be able to participate in the adventure by voting for each important choice of the story. Enough to treat yourself to a very atypical horror movie night!
