Thousands of people responded Wednesday to the call of the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi (YAW) to demonstrate once morest the decision of the Constitutional Council.

In a judgment delivered on June 4, the Constitutional Council rejected Yaw’s appeals, de facto disqualifying the 53 holders of the national list of the coalition for the Legislative elections of July 31, 2022.

“Our list of incumbents will participate and our head of the national list Ousmane Sonko will go to the national assembly”, supported the mayor of Dakar, Barthélémy Dias who leads the list of the coalition for the department of Dakar.

“Yewwi’s list (of incumbents) will be validated or there will be no elections in this country,” he said.

“Our fight is once morest Macky Sall, it is once morest Antoine Diome (Minister of the Interior)”, explained Déthié Fall, national representative of YAW. He, in the process, deplored the “obvious bias” of the Minister of the Interior which led to this situation.

“President Macky Sall saw fit to order his Minister of the Interior and the judges of the Constitutional Council to invalidate the list (of holders) of Yewwi Askan Wi but he was wrong because Yewwi will participate in the elections and on July 31, we will beat him hands down,” said Habib Sy, one of the leaders of the opposition coalition.

For the main leaders of the coalition who have succeeded each other at the microphone, the strategic alliance forged between Yaw and the Wallu Senegal coalition, headed by former President Abdoulaye Wade, disturbs the power in place.

The two coalitions each presented a national list but joined forces in the departments where the votes of the two camps will go to the list with the best chance of passing the presidential coalition Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY).

Deputy Ousmane Sonko, head of the coalition list, returned to what he called “the abuses” and “scandals” of President Macky Sall’s governance.

For these Legislatives, 8 lists are in competition once morest 47 during the last legislative elections of 2017. Citizen sponsorship and parity led to the disqualification of 7 lists.
