I had already reported on the Intellivision Amico in the blog. This is a retro console whose launch title is already in early 2021 had been presented. At that point, they were already behind schedule, because the console was originally supposed to be launched in 2020. Later it was autumn 2021, then the end of 2021. But the months have passed and the Amico is still not available. As current reports openthere is probably something wrong with Intellivision.
Those who pre-ordered the Intellivision Amico are currently receiving an email from CEO Phil Adam, who breaks down the difficulties behind the scenes. Many employees had to be laid off in order to reduce operating costs. At the same time, the decision was made to license some of its brands to third parties in order to bring money into the coffers. So you put your resources into the completion of the Amico, because only if you deliver a high-quality system will you still have a chance.
Financial difficulties are also threatening, since many pre-orderers are now fed up: After several delays, there are a large number of customers who have decided to cancel. Those inquiries are currently being processed slowly. The intention is that all refunds will be made gradually.
Intellivision has already carried out a test run for the production, which probably also made the above video possible. But when should the Amico finally go into customer hands? Apparently everything and nothing is possible: According to Adam, the hope is to deliver the consoles in 2022. That sounds extremely vague. As early as February 2022, there were rumors that Intellivision was close to bankruptcy. In a round of financing, they wanted to raise 5 million US dollars, but only came up with 58,001 US dollars or stopped the round at that point.
My guess is that the Intellivision Amico will probably end up as vaporware and bankruptcy will be announced at some point in the coming weeks.
