Helmut Marko, Red Bull F1’s motorsports adviser, believes that Pierre Guthrie, who has been excluded from Red Bull Racing’s seats, has no better option than remaining in AlphaTauri.
Red Bull Racing announced that it will extend its contract with Sergio Perez until the end of 2024 following the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. Helmut Marko explained that it was a move to ensure the continuity of the front running team.
“On Friday before the practice session in Monaco, we signed the contract, allowing the Czech Republic to focus more on the race weekend,” Helmut Marko told Formel1.de.
“Looking at Red Bull’s history, there is one particular feature that sets us apart: continuity and future plans. Therefore, we wanted to be clear regarding the next few years.”
However, Sergio Perez’s contract extension closed the door to Pierre Guthrie, whose performance by Red Bull’s sister team Alpha Tauri, alongside Max Verstappen, was a candidate for Red Bull Racing.
26-year-old Pierre Guthrie has signed with Afatauri (Red Bull) until the end of 2023, at which point Guthrie wants to join a top team that many believe deserves his talent.
“Of course I talked to Guthrie before Perez signed his contract,” Helmut Marko explained.
“We have to see what happens following 2023.”
“What is his alternative? At this point, I don’t think there is a significantly better alternative than AlphaTauri.”
Helmut Marko hinted that AlphaTauri is likely to continue with Pierre Guthrie and Yuki Tsunoda in 2023.
“Probably the current drivers can be presumed to remain in their place,” Helmut Marko said.
“But the coronavirus is still there, so young stars may have to step in.”
“Of course I hope no one is injured, but they will have to wait another year (F1 seat).”
