Mexico will have nine female governors for the first time

Following the results of this Sunday’s elections, in which the rulers of six states were elected, the now-elected governors, Mara Lezama, in Quintana Roo and María Teresa Jiménez, in Aguascalientes, join the list of seven women who hold a position at the head of the entities that make up the country.

With their election, Lezama, for the government party, Morena, and Jiménez, for the National Action Party, PAN, make up a list of nine women heading a governorship, a historical figure in the electoral processes of Mexico. The electoral adviser of the INE, Claudia Zavala, has assured in an interview for the station Radio Oroin Puebla, which celebrates the historical fact that this situation represents: “This progress has to do with a decision that was promoted by the INE in the sense of having a national perspective with a gender focus”, he assured.

The women who are in charge of entities, following Sunday’s elections, are the following: in the Mexican capital, Claudia Sheimbaum; in Tlaxcala, Lorena Cuellar; Campeche, Layda Sansores; Baja California, Marina Del Pilar Avila; Colima, Indira Vizcaino; Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, and Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, all of them for Morena. In addition, Maru Campos, in Chihuahua, and María Teresa Jiménez, for the PAN.
