Axenstrasse open once more following falling rocks
The Axenstrasse between Sisikon and Flüelen was once once more closed for several hours on Sunday. Rockfalls occurred in the Gumpisch area during a violent thunderstorm.
Around 1:30 p.m., the monitoring instruments detected terrain movements in the “Gumpisch” area, which subsequently led to stones hitting the safety nets above Axenstrasse. Axenstrasse therefore had to be closed immediately, the Uri cantonal police announced in a statement on Sunday followingnoon. No persons were injured. According to initial findings, the road and bridge were not damaged.
According to the police, further rockfalls and mudslides might not be ruled out for the time being due to the current weather conditions. For safety reasons, the Axenstrasse therefore remained closed to traffic between the Flüelen roundregarding and the Wolfsprung junction. Kapo Uri said: “As soon as the weather conditions permit, the situation on site will be assessed by specialists.” You might then give the all-clear before 7 p.m. Since then, traffic has been rolling once more.
The Schwyz fire brigade was called in to regulate traffic at the Brunner Wolfsprung. Local traffic might still drive to Sisikon from the north. A detour via the A2/A14 was recommended for transit traffic.
The thunderstorm cell passed over the Brunnen area following 1:15 p.m. In Morschach it hailed intensely, roads were covered with a white layer, and hail damage occurred in the gardens.
