The Academy of Medicine admits to being worried regarding the neurological consequences caused by an infection with the Covid-19 virus.

The pandemic Covid-19 has been quiet for a few months in France. However, infections are still present, on average over 7 days of just under 18,000 contaminations per day in France. Via A press releasethe National Academy of Medicine has just come out in favor of neurological and psychiatric monitoring of the long forms of Covid-19.

The National Academy of Medicine explains first of all: “Infection with SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of neurological-like symptoms, in adults as well as in children. the acute phase“, these symptoms raise questions regarding their relationship with the viral infection, their mechanism and their consequences on the future of patients”. Moreover, the long form of Covid-19 can be characterized by a persistence of these symptoms beyond four weeks following infection.

The institution adds that “the possibility of sequelae corresponding to lasting symptoms is now mentioned by several follow-up studies of infected patients. These mainly affect the neuropsychiatric sphere, but long-term persistent symptoms are also observed in other respiratory, cardiovascular, neurosensory or even endocrine systems”. In nearly 10% of long Covid-19 cases, several studies agree on a decline in cognitive performance.

Faced with a high number of people infected with the Covid-19 virus, the National Academy of Medicine warns of the risk of a substantial increase in the burden linked to lasting cognitive disorders on the health system; announces the establishment of a working group called “Covid and nervous system” in order to understand the acute neurological forms and neuropsychiatric symptomatology in the long forms of Covid-19; recalls the importance of studying the long-term consequences and the social weight of prolonged neurological and psychiatric forms and the possibilities of preventive or curative treatment.
