Long queues and disgruntled passengers: a technical problem causes havoc at Brussels Airport

“Since this morning, large queues have been observed at the passport control of passengers on non-Schengen flights, carried out by the federal police”, recognizes Brussels Airport in a press release. A total of 66 non-Schengen flights were scheduled this Sunday out of a total of 229 departing flights, which represents around 30% of non-Schengen flights, a spokeswoman for the airport told Belga.

On social networks, several videos circulated showing long queues of passengers and travelers, exasperated, expressed their anger.

In addition to the many flights planned over a fairly short period, the e-gates were unavailable on Sunday due to a technical problem, which greatly increases waiting times.

“All the counters for carrying out border controls are however full. An additional team is even on site to manage the flow of passengers”, indicates for her part a spokesperson for the federal police, specifying that the police are doing their best. “to streamline the queues”. However, the technical problem with the e-gates will not be solved today, she concedes.

Brussels Airport advises passengers on non-Schengen flights to arrive at the airport well in time, i.e. three hours in advance.
