Schiphol Airport forced to cancel all landings from a European destination… because there are too many people

No more passengers will land in Amsterdam from a European destination, the Dutch company said on Saturday. A Brussels-Amsterdam flight, scheduled for 6:20 p.m., is announced as canceled on the Brussels Airport website. KLM had announced that it would cancel up to fifty flights a day over the long Whitsun weekend due to expected crowds at Schiphol. The airline wanted to contribute in this way “to a manageable situation at the airport and within the company as such.”

The past few weeks have often been chaotic at Schiphol Airport. The airline industry has indeed made massive layoffs of staff during the coronavirus pandemic, but now that demand for air travel is picking up, it is struggling to find enough staff. Lines stretched outside the departures hall on Saturday, with the airport itself calling the situation “busy but manageable”.
