Tesla (TSLA.US) layoffs now variable? Musk says salaried headcount will be flat
Tesla (TSLA.US) CEO Elon Musk appeared to retract his previous layoff announcement in a Saturday tweet reply following sending an email regarding the layoffs, Zhitong Finance APP has learned. The number of salaried employees may not change dramatically, he wrote.
Musk tweeted that the total number of employees Tesla will hire will increase, but the number of salaried employees “should be flat.” Musk, however, did not say whether Tesla would convert some of its existing salaried employees to part-time workers, or whether Tesla would hire new employees.
It is understood that Musk said in an email to Tesla executives on Friday titled “Global Hiring Pause” that he had “a very bad feeling” regarding the economic situation. Musk therefore said he would need to cut his salaried headcount by 10%. At the same time, the number of hourly workers at Tesla will increase. Musk also said the statement did not apply to any employees who “build cars, battery packs or install solar power,” according to Archyde.com.
Additionally, two days ago, Musk sent a memo to his executives telling them to either go back to the office or quit, according to Electrek. Tesla employed 100,000 people at the end of last year, according to an SEC filing.
As of press time, Tesla has not commented on this.
